Business Communication in Hospitality and Tourism (BCHT)

In this so-called “age of communication”, the hospitality and tourism workplace continues to be challenged by endless concerns related to communication. The hospitality and tourism workplace is people-oriented, as it is focused on providing excellent service to target clientele. It also employs a vast manpower resource to get things done. In this service-oriented industry, day-to-day work calls for a continuous flow of information that should be delivered promptly, accurately and efficiently through the most appropriate medium. Constant interaction and close coordination among employees is a necessity. Teamwork is of utmost importance to be able to get things done promptly and according to standards, to satisfy guests and exceed their expectations. All these require effective communication.
On the other hand, poor communication leads to low output and productivity, dissatisfied clientele, and at times, workplace conflict. This course is focused on the formal communication processes commonly used in the hospitality and tourism workplace. Emphasis is given to channels of communication, the different mediums and tools used in business communication and how each can be used effectively, and the practice and art of communication in the workplace. It also covers verbal and nonverbal means of communication used in the business context, the use of technology in communication, the correct format of various business communication tools as well as public speaking.

Hospitality Supervisor Certificate (HSC)

Today’s successful hospitality supervisors must understand the difference between being an employee and taking on a new supervisory role. They need to manage the transition and understand their new responsibilities and how to best implement them. They need to have effective skills such as leadership, time management, cultural understanding and communication. They must keep pace with change, improve their knowledge, and grow daily through their work experiences. The HSC provides a basic foundation for new supervisors or students wishing to get ahead of the game and learn some basic supervisory skills.

The Hospitality Supervisor Certificate (HSC) consists of a series of ten modules which are self-paced online seminars with corresponding quizzes and activities that have been developed for students and hospitality professionals. Students will also be required to take a final exam.

The Managing Diversity in the Workplace Certificate (MDC) was developed for current and future professionals who want to move up the ladder or are looking for that first management position. The MDC’s objective is simple: to increase participants’ ability to understand, develop and practice the most important managerial skill there is – achieving specific objectives through working with people. The course takes a “people-centered” approach to management and focuses on the functions of management, the basic principles of effective communication, cultural understanding, creating a culturally sensitive and respectful workplace, conflict management, teamwork, and motivation.
